(Before that I was using Subversion via TortoiseSVN, which I still use for some non-GitHub projects.) I learned how to use Git from ''Git Essentials'' by Ferdinando Santacroce, and I try to follow its advice. For a reference I use ''Git Pocket Guide'' by Richard Silverman. Rather than typing all the Git commands myself, I'm lazy and use the GUI tool [https://www.gitkraken.com/ GitKraken]. As I said above, I use the GitHub flow workflow to organize my commits.
